Grillbot Grill-Cleaning Robot Review

A robot that scrubs your grates while you watch, which is exactly as entertaining and almost as useful as it sounds. It does clean — loosely, noisily, eventually. A brush and ninety seconds of elbow grease still does the job better, which makes this a gift, not a tool.

Our score

Reasons to buy

  • Genuinely fun — the party trick works and everyone wants to watch
  • Does remove the loose char while you do something else
  • A real gift-solution for the griller who owns everything

Reasons to avoid

  • A manual brush is faster and cleans corners and edges the robot misses
  • Loud — the clatter of brushes on grates is not background noise
  • Batteries, charging and brush replacement: maintenance for a maintenance device
  • Mind the temperature limits before setting it on a hot grill

Let's give the Grillbot its due before the verdict: it is a real robot that really scrubs grill grates with spinning brushes while you stand there holding a beverage, and as backyard theatre it is legitimately delightful. The question a review must answer is not whether it works — it broadly does — but whether it beats the incumbent technology, which is a brush and a minute and a half of your arm.

It doesn't. The robot wanders its way to 'acceptably de-charred' over a stretch of clattering minutes, misses the edges and corners where the real crust lives, and asks in return that you charge its batteries, replace its brushes, and respect its temperature limits before placing it on a grill that recently held fire. The manual brush asks for none of that and finishes before the robot has settled on a direction. As a labour-saving device, it saves the wrong labour: the ninety seconds nobody actually minded.

And yet — the score isn't a one, because the Grillbot understands something about itself. It is a gift. It is the answer to 'what do you buy the griller who has everything,' it produces genuine laughter on the patio, and it does, technically, clean. Buy it for the person, not the task, and nobody ends up disappointed. Buy it as equipment and you'll be back to the brush by August, with a robot in the garage drawer next to the electric wine opener.
